5 Most Popular Fillers This Season

From the makeup you use to skincare products, what you put on your face is your decision. And the same is true for cosmetic procedures and dermal fillers.

While most of us don’t need dermal fillers, they can add volume and reduce lines and wrinkles as we age.

They’re popular too, with more than 3.4 million people having filler procedures in 2020. So if you’ve wanted to make your face look younger this year, below are some of the most popular dermal fillers that surgeons recommend.

Understand The Difference Between Fillers And Relaxers

Before we get to the recommendations, it’s essential to know the difference between dermal fillers and other injectables, including Botox and Dysport

Dr. Smita R. Ramanadham of New Jersey says, “Dermal fillers and other injectables are put into problem areas in the face to reduce signs of aging. But fillers just plump and enhance the area, such as adding volume to hollow cheeks.”

She adds: “Botox, on the other hand, works by paralyzing some of the facial muscles to reduce the appearance of furrows in the brow, crow’s feet, and smile lines.”

Dr. Smita talks to her patients about the differences between these products and which may be best for them.

Now for the most popular fillers this season:

Juvederm includes several related fillers that are used in different parts of the face. Juvederm Voluma XC can give you improved cheek contours, which tend to flatten as we age. It also will smooth lines around the nose and mouth (including those lines between the sides of the nose and mouth).

One of the advantages of Juvederm is the gel is supple and uniform, so it looks as natural as possible. Juvederm can last six to nine months, but if you have a touch-up about three weeks later, it can last longer.

Juvederm Ultra XC

This filler provides more volume to the lips, making the vertical lip lines less pronounced.

Juvederm products contain hyluronic acid, which is made naturally by the body but decreases as we age. The injections stimulate the production of collagen to make your face look younger and fuller.

If you don’t like the results, your healthcare provider can inject a product that breaks down Juvederm.

Restylane also has several related products that treat various facial problem areas. For example, the original Restylane effectively reduces folds and wrinkles, and it can increase volume in thin lips.

Restylane Lyft is a thicker product that can work wonders on deep lines and wrinkles, including the nasolabial folds. It also is effective in enhancing volume in the cheeks. Plus, it can reduce wrinkles and lines on the backs of the hands.

Restylane Silk works to plump the lips, and Restylane Refine is effective for the nasolabial folds.

All the Restylane products last between six months and a year.

Sculptra Aesthetic

Sculptra was first used in people with HIV who lost a lot of facial fat. It’s now approved to be used for building up the cheeks in older people. It also works to boost skin thickness and reduce lines and folds.

There are off-label uses that can help other areas, such as cellulite and the rear for a non-surgical butt lift. However, it’s not to be used on the lips or around the eyes.

Sculptra contains poly-L-lactic acid that stimulates collagen production. Unfortunately, it takes several treatments for the best results, so you’ll need another injection after four to six weeks.

Your healthcare provider will evaluate your treatment areas and let you know how many injections you need.

This filler can last up to two years, and most patients need three injections.

Radiesse is effective in treating deeper facial creases, especially the nasolabial folds. Some doctors also use it to plump the cheeks and other parts of the face, but it’s not for the lips.

Radiesse contains calcium hydroxylapatite, which is a mineral in bones and teeth. When it’s put in a dermal filler, the calcium particles are suspended in a thick gel.

The filler increases facial volume almost immediately. But the gel is absorbed over several months, and your body metabolizes the calcium, producing collagen in the treated area.

Results can last more than a year, and because it stimulates your collagen production, you may need fewer touch-ups.

Ideal candidates for this product are from 35 to 60 who have deep lines and folds around the mouth and nose. It also works well on the backs of the hands. It also works well for patients who have lost facial volume from HIV.

Fat Injections

If you want an all-natural procedure to reduce the signs of aging, consider fat injections

Your surgeon uses liposuction to remove fat from your abdomen, thighs, or sides, then purifies it. Next, they inject it into the lower eyelids, cheeks, brow, and other areas to fill in lines and wrinkles.

You also may want to think about this option if you’re allergic to bovine collagen. Also, if you’re having liposuction already, it’s a cost-effective procedure.

Fat injection is surgery and should only be done by a board-certified plastic surgeon specializing in facial procedures.

How Long Do Fillers Last?

How long the fillers last depends on your body, the product, and where it’s used. Usually, the denser the filler and the deeper the surgeon injects it, the longer it stays.

Hyaluronic acid fillers usually don’t last as long as others, ranging from six to 18 months. But injections in the lips need more touch-ups than those to lines and folds in the face.

Synthetic dermal fillers last longer because your body doesn’t absorb them.

Fat injections can last for years, but note that not all of the transferred fat will survive. Your surgeon will overfill the treated area that may look too full, but it will eventually look more natural. Also, fat injections tend to last the longest in the cheeks.

By Dermal fillers can be an effective way to turn back the clock and make your face look years younger – and without surgery.
