Dressing for Your Body Shape: 4 Things to Consider

Knowing what clothes will make you look and feel your best isn’t always straightforward. We all have different body shapes and sizes, which means that it can sometimes be difficult to follow the latest trends and fashion styles. However, many people make the mistake of thinking that there are certain types of clothes, colors, and styles that are out of bounds to them. But this is far from the truth.

The key to dressing for your body shape is becoming familiar with your proportions, so that you know which areas of your body you want to accentuate and what will show off your best features.  So, here are 4 things to consider when dressing for your body shape.

Know Your Body Shape

Before you can successfully dress for your body shape, you need to know what your body shape is. There are a few different body shapes to choose from, and while you may be a mixture of more than one shape, having an idea of what shape you might be can make dressing and styling yourself so much easier.

The best way to get to know your body shape is by noticing your curves, and how your hips, waist, and bust all connect. Their connection is usually the easiest way to identify the shape of your body. The most common body shapes include, ‘apple’ (generally bodies that are heavier on top than the bottom), a ‘pear’ shape (bodies that are heavier on the bottom, instead of the top), rectangular shaped, and hourglass figures. It is important to remember that there is nothing wrong with any type of body shape, and you should learn to love the body you are in.

Don’t Assume There are Certain Clothes You Can’t Wear

While we do recommend that you consider your body shape when picking out what clothes to buy, you should never assume that certain clothing items and styles are out of bounds to you because of your body shape. Even though you might instantly think that something won’t suit you, you may be surprised to learn that it does. Or, you may even be able to interpret the look in a different way to make it look good on you.

A great way to experiment with clothes is to compare the display mannequin to your body style  while you are out shopping. You may find that the mannequin has a similar body style to you, which will make it easier for you to decide on a purchase, and if your body shape isn’t similar, you can look at the different additions you could include to make the outfit look perfect on you. Seeing an outfit styled on a display mannequin really helps to bring it to life.

Your Body Shape May Change

Always remember that your body shape may change over time, so just because you didn’t feel good in an outfit a few years ago, doesn’t mean that you can’t try it again and look great!

Always Be Comfortable

When dressing for your body shape, it is important that you only wear clothes that make you look and feel good, as well as make you comfortable. It is very unlikely that you are going to feel good about your body shape, and the clothes you are wearing, if you don’t feel comfortable in them. This means not buying clothes that are in trend if they are too tight or uncomfortable to wear.

If you find yourself always wearing clothes that feel uncomfortable, then it could be because you are dressing for the wrong body shape.

Knowing your body shape can make dressing to look good even easier and transform how you feel about yourself on a daily basis.
