6 Tips to Upgrade Your Style in the New Year

Upgrade Your Style

The ball has dropped, the countdown has ended and here we are standing with open arms at the start of a brand spanking new year. Collectively, we think it’s safe to say that we’re ready to embrace all of the fresh and exciting possibilities 2021 has to offer us. We’re also super psyched to be saying goodbye to one of the worst years in U.S. history. But, current affairs aside, we’re looking forward to the clean slate the new year brings and a chance to start anew, if you will. So, what exactly are we intending to improve upon this year? Why, our wardrobe, of course. You know what they say: Dress for the part you want, not the one you have. And this is our year to shine, wouldn’t you agree? Keep scrolling for six tips you can use to upgrade your style in the new year and start living your best life on day one.

1. Out with the Old

Start your year off right by cleaning out your closet. Easier said than done, we know, but if you set some ground rules with yourself and really focus, you’ll be shocked at how empowering it can be to simply part with the old (and make room for the new). While there are several schools of thought about what the best strategy is for purging one’s closet, the simplest thing to do would be to make a few piles: to keep, to donate/sell, and, finally, to throw away

Start with the obvious–tossing clothes that don’t fit, can’t be repaired or you just don’t love anymore (or maybe never did). Next, broaden your criteria to examine what you own vs. what you need. Do you have all of your desired wardrobe staples like crisp button-down shirts, classic white and black tees, khaki anything? Finally, look at the items you love and think about how you’re wearing them. Can they be reimagined into a whole new look if you mix and match the pieces you already own? Taking stock of what clothing is actually a part of your wardrobe before you start adding to it will save you a world of time and money when you start building your new look for the new year.

2. Invest in the New

If you’re determined to start this year off with a style upgrade, then chances are you will need to invest in a couple of new pieces to get you on your way. While trends come and go, some wardrobe essentials are forever. Stack your closet with pieces that wear well with trends. For example, a classic black turtleneck and jeans can easily be paired with trendy cheetah boots or a faux fur jacket. Some items you’ll want to guarantee are in your closet this year would include flattering button-up shirts, stylish knit sweaters, a stunning little black dress, elegant black heels and a classically cool leather jacket. Not only do all of these pieces demand attention on their own, but they also mix well with whatever trendy vibe you happen to be giving off this year (or next).

3. Accessorize

One of the easiest ways to add a little oomph to your everyday look would be to amp up your accessory game. Think chunky bracelets, statement pendant necklaces and fun, oversized hoop earrings. But, of course, stylish accessories aren’t just a bling thing. That chic handbag and large-brimmed hat at the back of your closet can be exactly what you’re looking for to elevate your outfit on a day-to-day basis. Add a shimmery belt to a classic black dress for a bit of eye-catching sparkle or try wearing a vibrant scarf to mix a pop of color into an otherwise bland ensemble. Even the right pair of sunglasses can get you all the attention–and flattery–you need. Trust us. Finding fashionable and cute accessories to add to your look can be the exact style upgrade you’ve been searching for.

4. Think in Layers

Dressing in layers is practically a necessity in the winter, so why not use it to your fashionable advantage? Layering is a great way to repurpose out-of-season clothing into a winter look instead. Try layering a thin cashmere sweater under a summer dress and adding leggings and boots for a fresh take on an old favorite. Or, why not become a jacket person this winter? Have fun layering faux fur coats and oversized blazers with comfy knit sweaters and faux leather leggings. Keep cozy in a sherpa-lined denim coat over your favorite tee or simply add a warm front-zip hoodie to your favorite pjs on a lazy Sunday morning (hey, no judgment here).

5. Give Yourself a Makeover

A quick way to make a noticeable difference in your appearance this year would be to change up your hair or makeup. If you’ve ever wanted to try a short bob or dye your hair a different color, then this is the year to do it. You could also have fun playing around with different makeup products and styles to find something new that suits you. Try out a bold red lipstick or commit to cat eyes this winter instead. Even changing your eyeshadow color palette can be the little difference that goes a long–and stylish–way.

6. Stay True to You

Whatever new style choices you make this year, remember to keep them within your personal comfort zone. In other words, don’t vow to become a completely different person overnight. For one thing, everyone loves you just the way you are. And second, if you don’t feel comfortable in the new clothes/look you pick out for yourself, then there’s no way you’ll keep it up–or look good in it. Because, really, when it comes down to it, the best upgrade you can give yourself this new year is a boost in confidence. After all, confidence is the ultimate style secret, no matter the outfit. So, do yourself a favor this year and love yourself for who you are. And then, dress that fabulous woman in the style she deserves.
